Andy is Professor of Environmental Policy and Dean: Interdisciplinary Research at the University of Leeds. He has a background in economics and public policy.
He completed his PhD at the LSE where he worked for ten years before moving to Leeds in 2006.
Andys current role is to bring together researchers from a wide range of backgrounds to enable them to conduct applied, engaged, impact-oriented research. His own work focuses on cities and climate change. In 2011, he authored the influential Mini-Stern review for the Leeds City Region that set out the economic case for low carbon development. This work then spread to other core cities in the UK, and grew into an international programme that has delivered low carbon development plans for cities in China, India, Brazil and multiple other countries around the world.
Andy specializes in inter-disciplinary, applied and impact-oriented research, and frequently works closely with governments, NGOs and community groups and industry bodies at international, national and local levels. He has been a contributor to international initiatives such as the Global Commission on Economy and Climate and has been an advisor to the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change and the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs as well as to various international institutions and national governments around the world.
