Microsoft Office developments

From January 2010 the default file formats used by Office 2007 for new documents will be changed to the new versions (docx, .xlsx and .pptx).

Currently, by default, Office 2007 saves files in 2003 formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt). This was done to make the transition to Office 2007 as easy as possible, and to improve compatibility while it was being rolled out. However, by January it will be available across campus. The new formats support a wider range of features, and provided the free conversion pack has been installed, earlier versions of Office can normally still open these files, though new features will not be visible.
The change to the new formats will happen automatically - you do not need to do anything.

Office 2007 will also be available on the Remote and Mobile Access service from January, replacing Office 2003. The equivalent student service (Desktop Anywhere) already provides both versions, and will continue to do so until the end of the 2009/10 session. This is to maintain consistency with the student computer clusters.
