Dr John Lockwood

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on 1 January 2024, of Dr John George Lockwood, former Senior Lecturer in the School of Geography.

After National Service, John entered Queen Mary College of the University of London where he graduated with a BSc in Physical Geography in 1956. He subsequently received a scholarship from The Drapers Company that enabled him to pursue a PhD in Climatology, achieved in 1960. He then spent time at the UK Meteorological Office working on upper air monsoon circulations over southern Asia and as an aviation weather forecaster. This period included two years lecturing at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, where he researched extreme rainfall events. He began his career at Leeds as a Lecturer in 1965. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1975 and then in 1989 became a Senior Fellow, fully retiring in 1992.

John’s funeral service will be held at 10am on Wednesday 31 January at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Kirkstall Lane, Headingley, Leeds LS6 3LF, on which day the flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast in his memory.
