Have your say on our Climate Plan

November marks two years since the University launched its ambitious Climate Plan in response to the climate crisis. Colleagues from across the University are invited to reflect on the Climate Plan.

Gair Wood

The University launched an ambitious Climate Plan in November 2021, which maps out key commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting a net zero city, sustainable travel, responsible investment, sharing institutional decision-making and refocusing research and education. You can find out more information about the Climate Plan here.

Our Climate Plan in action

Most notable examples of our Climate Plan in action, include recent tree planting at Gair Wood to create one of the most significant woodland projects in the North of England. Acting as a Living Laboratory, Gair Wood eventually be home to 66,000 new trees, providing outdoor learning and research opportunities for our staff and students to test carbon capture.

To inform our plan to achieve NetZero, we have undertaken feasibility studies across 21 buildings and assessed the electricity requirement to support Net Zero delivery. Work to secure this supply is now underway and more than 2,000 lights in University residences have been upgraded, including LED lighting in St Marks and Devonshire Halls of Residence.

New electric vehicle (EV) charging points are being added to campus and workshops in March identified opportunities to embed sustainable travel across the University.

More information, including progress reports, is available on the Climate Plan SharePoint hub.

How to get involved

We want to hear from colleagues across the University to help shape future activity related to the climate crisis. This is an opportunity to share your views and tell us which aspects of the Climate Plan matter most to you.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be asking you to take part in a short online survey via Microsoft Forms. The survey will include eight questions and should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. As a thank you for taking part, you can also opt into our prize draw to win one of 5 £25 Love2Shop vouchers.

In addition to the survey, there will be the opportunity to take part in depth interviews, either in-person or online. You can register your interest by completing the Microsoft Form.
