Student records system upgrade

An email sent to all staff by Professor Jeff Grabill and Rachel Brealey on 21 April.

Dear colleague,

I’m writing to update you on some essential upgrades we are making to our student records system, Banner, in June.

In order to provide a secure and stable platform for Banner moving forward, we have made the decision to move Banner to a cloud-based platform. This will enable us to perform essential and ongoing updates, which will increase our resilience to cyber attacks and provide a more stable development platform. Moving to the cloud is a precondition for improving the user experience, in addition to achieving our digital transformation and sustainability goals. This will, therefore, provide a stronger basis for us to provide students with an enhanced digital experience and colleagues with better tools. We acknowledge this has been an area of frustration, and prioritising Banner updates will be a step towards these improvements.

Given the range and complexity of use of Banner throughout the full calendar year – from admissions through to graduation – the timing of the upgrade has been carefully reviewed and tested in order to meet system deadlines and to mitigate as much delivery risk to the University as possible.

The Student Record System will have view only access from 4pm on Thursday 15 June until 12 noon on Tuesday 20 June in order to implement essential updates. We understand this could cause disruption in some areas and are already working with key colleagues to understand and mitigate this. We will share more detailed information with you in May.

If you have any questions or wanted to raise any concerns in the meantime, please contact SLP@leeds.ac.uk.

With best wishes,

Professor Jeff Grabill, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Student Education
