Earthquake in Syria and Turkey
An email sent to all staff on Monday 13 February by Professor Hai-Sui Yu, Principal Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost
Dear colleagues,
It has been truly heart-rending to see reports of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria earlier this week. So many people have tragically lost their lives, with many more losing their homes and trying to survive in freezing winter conditions.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this disaster. Within our own community there are students, staff and alumni connected with Turkey and Syria and while we have already made contact with some of them, I wanted to share the support available at the University for anyone affected in any way by these tragic events.
Support for our community
For anyone affected by these events – whether that’s directly or indirectly - support is available from our counselling and wellbeing services, the Chaplaincy and Leeds University Union.
Staff - If you are a member of staff and would like to access these services please visit https://forstaff.leeds.ac.uk/news/article/7698/support_in_response_to_world_events
Students - If you know of any students affected, please direct them to: https://students.leeds.ac.uk/worldeventssupport
Join LUU for a vigil
LUU's Student Executive, in collaboration with student societies, are planning to hold a vigil in the University Precinct next week, with planning for additional fundraising activities already underway. Follow the Turkic Society on Instagram for more information and ways to help.
Making a donation
For anyone who wants to donate to support Turkey and Syria, the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has launched the Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal.
Once again, our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible tragedy.
With best wishes,
Professor Hai-Sui Yu
Principal Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost
