John Cheseldine

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on 3 January 2023, of John Cheseldine, Client Support Specialist Technician, from IT Services.

John first joined the University in 2002 as an IT Technician and he immediately made an impact, not only due to his technical expertise, but also his kindness and larger than life dress style. In 2009, John volunteered to cover for a colleague at short notice, at what was then known as, the IT Shop. John and a colleague picked up the running of the IT Shop, implemented new ways of working and effectively saved the IT Shop.

In 2014, John joined Client Service Operations (formally the Desktop Support Service), offering IT help to areas across campus. For a number of years, John provided dedicated support at St James' Hospital, and was a hugely important part of life there, gaining recognition for his work from the staff at the site. In 2019, John took on the role as Equalities Officer for Unite and supported a number of colleagues in the workplace.

John had a passion for languages, particularly Chinese, and was a lover of retro technology. His kindness and love for all things technical shone through when he advised staff and students on their IT needs and he referred to IT Services as his second family.  He will be greatly missed as a colleague, a friend and as well as by those he helped in so many ways.

Tributes to John are being collected and will be shared with his family. If you would like to share a tribute, a memory of John, photograph or a message, they are being collected through a dedicated remembrance page

The funeral service will be held at 3.15pm on Wednesday 1 March 2023 at Cottingley Crematorium, Leeds. The flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast on that day in John’s memory.
