Fred Archenhold

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on Friday 14 October, of Fred Archenhold, former Senior Lecturer in the School of Education.

Fred began his long association with the University in 1953, graduating with a degree in physics in 1956. Following appointment as Head of Physics at Edward Shelley High School, Walsall, and Huddersfield New College, he was appointed as Lecturer in the School of Education in 1969, being promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1978.  

Fred served on a wide range of departmental and University committees, and was Dean of the Faculty of Education between 1990 and 1992. He was prominent for his work with the Joint Matriculation Board, being the University’s representative on its Board and Examinations Council from 1977, taking up a four-year term as Chairman of the Examinations Council in 1982.  

Fred became the second Director of the Centre for Studies in Science Education and Mathematics Education in 1982. He retired in 1994, returning as a Senior Fellow to continue his work in Physics Education.

The funeral service will be held at 11am on Monday 7 November at St Giles Church, Church Hill, Bramhope LS16 9BA, on which day the flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast in Fred’s memory.
