Emeritus Professor Duncan Mara

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on Friday 15 July 2022, of Emeritus Professor Duncan Mara, former Professor of Civil Engineering.

Duncan was recruited in 1979 by Professor Tony Cusens. A world-leading researcher and academic in the field of public health engineering, during the 1980s and 1990s he strengthened his grasp of simple low-cost low-energy wastewater treatment systems, and put the subject of wastewater reuse on a rational and risk-based footing. By providing a rigorous synthesis of epidemiological evidence and engineering advice he demonstrated that safe and effective wastewater reuse was possible, without recourse to wasteful and over-engineered solutions. He retired in 2010 after 31 years’ service to the University.

A private wake was held on Tuesday 9 August 2022, on which day the flag on the Parkinson Building was flown at half-mast in Duncan’s memory.
