John Scully

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on 30 May 2022, of Dr John Scully, former Reader in Corrosion Science in the Department of Metallurgy.

After gaining a degree in Metallurgy and a PhD in corrosion from the University of Cambridge, John worked for two years at the Olin Mathieson Corporation in New Haven, Connecticut, USA.  He returned to the UK in 1963 and was appointed as a Lecturer in Metallurgy at Leeds. His field of expertise in corrosion gained him world-wide recognition and his work is familiar to generations of metallurgists and corrosion technologists.  He was appointed Editor in Chief of Corrosion Science Journal, a role he held successfully for a number of years. John was promoted to Reader in 1970 and, upon retirement in 1991, he was re-engaged as a Senior Fellow in the Department until 1995.

The funeral service will be held at 11.30am on Friday 8 July at Lawnswood Crematorium, on which day the flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast in his memory.  The funeral directors have asked those attending to arrive by 11.15am, please, and that a mask be worn indoors.
