Important email from Chief Information Officer, Dan Simms

Email from Chief Information Officer, Dan Simms, sent to All Staff on Wednesday 16 March 2022.

Dear colleague,

The contents of this email are important. Please take time to read and action this email today.

We have recently been subject to a cyber-attack from an unknown third party. At this stage there’s no direct impact, however we’re taking action to defend the University from this and future attacks and need your help with this.

Please follow the instructions below to change your password now.

In order to make this easier for you, the Self Service Password Reset (SSPR) facility is available. If you haven’t registered with this, please do so before you log off today.

If you haven’t changed your password by 7am tomorrow (Thursday 17 March), you will be prompted to do so. To ensure a smooth change, you will need to make sure all the devices you use to access University information are set to forget your current password. Please see below for the link to the Knowledge Base article explaining how to do this, together with other helpful resources.

Given the short timescales involved, if you work with colleagues who check their email infrequently, please share this information with them.

Selecting a strong password

We strongly recommend selecting a long password that’s made up of multiple words. For example, ‘I play golf on a Wednesday%’ – this will help you meet our complexity requirements and make it memorable. You will not be able to select a password you’ve previously used.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

With best wishes,

Dan Simms
Chief Information Officer
