Ann Hughes (née Milner)

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on Wednesday 2 March 2022, of Mrs Ann Hughes, former Administrative Officer in the Registry.

Ann came to the University in 1979 as a Senior Clerk within the Registry, working in the Admissions, Exams and Students Section, followed by a stint in the Colleges Office. In the late 1980s she was asked by the then Registrar, Jim Walsh, to be his secretary and, in 1992 worked for his successor Eddie Newcomb. When Eddie left the University at the end of 1994, Ann became the Personal Assistant to the Personnel Director, Sally Wheeler, a post she held until 2000, at which time she became an Administrative Officer within Human Resources.

Ann was a model example of a PA: professional, organised and meticulous. She was generous and warm-hearted and gladly gave her time to help and nurture the more junior members of the Registry. She was greatly missed when she retired in 2004, and she kept in close contact with many of her University friends and colleagues – a testament to the high regard in which she was held. Around the time of her retirement she married her long-time partner Howard, but sadly they only had a few more years together before his death.

The funeral service will be held at 10.45am on Monday 21 March 2022 at Rawdon Crematorium, Leeds Road, Rawdon, LS19 6JP, and afterwards at Weetwood Hall Hotel, Otley Road, Weetwood, LS16 5PS. Family flowers only, please; donations can be made to Martin House. The flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast in Ann’s memory on that day.
