Bill Thomson

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on 5 January 2022, of Bill Thomson, a former Departmental Superintendent of predecessors of the School of Biology in the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

Bill began working at the University of Leeds in the early 1980s as Departmental Superintendent for the Department of Zoology, based in the Baines Wing. He had responsibility for all technical staff, buildings and finance for the Department.

Bill remained in this role as the Department underwent various mergers to form what would become the current School of Biology. Bill oversaw the building of the Miall Building, and the move to the current location. He retired in 2000, having provided 17 years of strong technical leadership.

Bill made multiple, pivotal contributions to the School and Faculty during his time at Leeds. He was a popular member of staff and he will be missed by colleagues at Leeds, friends and family.

The funeral service will be held at 1pm on Wednesday 19 January 2022, at St James Church, South Anston, Sheffield, S25 5DH, on which day the flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast in his memory.
