Emeritus Professor Jonathan Tunnicliffe

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on Wednesday 15 December 2021, of Emeritus Professor Jonathan Tunnicliffe, former Head of the Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering.

After graduating from Leeds in 1954, Professor Tunnicliffe joined the National Coal Board. He was elected to the Milburn Chair of Mining and Mineral Engineering and Head of the Department of Mining at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1982. With the merger of the Newcastle and Leeds Departments of Mining and Mineral Engineering, he became Head of the new Department and took up his appointment at Leeds in 1990. He vigorously oversaw the strengthening of the Department both in terms of staff and facilities.

His time at Leeds was cut short by ill health and he retired in 1991, at which time the title and status of Emeritus Professor was bestowed upon him.

The funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday 18 January 2022 at St Helen’s Church, Sandal, Wakefield, WF2 6EJ. Refreshments will be provided afterwards in the Church Schoolroom. A cremation will follow at Wakefield Crematorium, which is to be attended by family members only.

An obituary is being prepared for publication by the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining, a link to which will be provided here once complete.
