What’s new in Mediasite?

Mediasite – the University’s Lecture Capture and media management service – will undergo a series of improvements.

Lecture capture July 2019

Mediasite allows staff and students to record, edit and share digital content. This ranges from automatic Lecture Capture in teaching rooms to uploading videos using personal capture and beyond.

On Saturday 28 August, Mediasite will be upgraded to version 8.0, which will introduce a range of features and updates, as outlined below.

The Digital Education Service is also taking this opportunity to remind colleagues of the Lecture Capture Retention and Deletion Policy.

Upcoming changes

Mediasite Desktop Recorder retirement

Mediasite Desktop Recorder will be retired on Friday 27 August and replaced by Mediasite Mosaic. This new application provides access to multiple recording options, and can also be used to bulk upload videos created in other applications to Mediasite. Full instructions on downloading and using it are available for Windows 10 and MacOS (Catalina onwards)

Mediasite: Create and Share Digital Content Workshops

Don’t miss our short workshop on digital content taking place on Wednesday 8 September. This session explores how to create and share digital content using Mediasite, including the new Mosaic application. The session is delivered via an online webinar and self-paced learning via Microsoft Sway

Mediasite Channels

Mediasite Channels are a new way to securely showcase video and audio content in Mediasite. They offer a number of improvements, including a streamlined, more mobile-friendly user interface. Once Mediasite 8.0 is installed, when students or staff click on the Media area of a module, they will see a Channel instead.

Reduction in content file size

Mediasite 8.0 features improved backend technology to reduce file sizes. All uploads and recordings will retain the same quality, but they will be significantly smaller files. This allows colleagues to store more learning and teaching content in Mediasite.

Future developments

Further functional enhancements – including improvements to the web editor, a redesigned player and integration with Microsoft Class Teams – are part of the Mediasite development roadmap. The Digital Education Service will share further details when release dates are confirmed.

Reminders for colleagues

Lecture Capture Retention and Deletion Policy

Colleagues are reminded that a change to the Lecture Capture Deletion and Retention Policy was implemented from 1 September 2019. The policy now states that scheduled lecture recordings are only retained for a period of two years. This applies to recordings created prior to, and after,1 September 2019.

You can move your content to your personal folder (My Drafts) in Mediasite if you wish to keep it.
