Using Top Hat to support teaching and assessment activities

Further resources are now available to support teaching colleagues in using Top Hat – one of the many digital education tools that has come into its own during the global pandemic.

Resources and training are available to colleagues in using Top Hat to enhance the learning experience of our students

Using Top Hat to support teaching and assessment activities. April 2021

Top Hat was implemented as our new institutional mobile voting solution in the summer of 2019.

A versatile tool, Top Hat offers a broad range of functionality to enhance the learning experience of our students by providing multiple quizzing and polling options. It has a broad range of question types, including multiple choice, click on target, sorting/ranking and long-answer questions.

In response to the covid-19 pandemic, Top Hat has also been utilised by faculties to support assessment activities, with functionality enabling the assignment of formative and summative assessments, which can be ‘open book’ and time limited or remotely monitored.

Extensive support available to teaching colleagues using Top Hat includes a unique concierge service, which can be used to enable the set-up of content within the tool, including polling and assessment questions.

Training courses are available on an ongoing basis, and Top Hat also includes interactive guides that walk users through how to perform key actions.

You can also book a slot at one of the regular support sessions with a colleague from the Digital Education Systems team to find out more about how to incorporate this tool into teaching or assessment activities.

See the Digital Practice website for further information on using Top Hat, including staff testimonials about how the tool has been used within schools and faculties at Leeds.
