A new Inside Track from Simone about annual leave and future arrangements

The following email was sent to all staff on Tuesday 23 March sharing a new Inside Track from Simone about annual leave and an update on leave arrangements.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simone Buitendijk, has published an Inside Track in which she reminds us of how important it is to take a break. She asks us all to discuss arrangements for taking our annual leave entitlement.

Carer’s leave

It has been agreed to extend the current carer’s leave provision of 10 days in a rolling calendar year (or your pro-rata equivalent) until 30 September 2021. This now coincides with the annual leave year. Remember that the usual ‘urgent and unplanned circumstances’ criterion in this policy does not need to apply at the moment; carer’s leave can be agreed for future dates where you know there will be an issue with care.

Christmas/New Year closure

An early decision has been made to repeat last year’s arrangement during Christmas and the New Year. The University will be closed to normal business from Tuesday 21 December 2021 to Monday 3 January 2022 inclusive.

As was the case last Christmas, there will be campus and professional services colleagues who will work at times during the Christmas period to keep our campus safe and secure and to support those students who remain. They, like all colleagues, need and deserve regular breaks and we will make sure that those who do need to work during the Christmas break ultimately get the same leave entitlement as everyone else.

Best wishes

Update 14 July 2021: Queen’s Jubilee Holidays 2022

The UK Government has announced an extra bank holiday to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, meaning that the May Bank Holiday weekend will be moved from Monday 30 May to Thursday 2 June with an additional bank holiday on Friday 3 June.

In order to accommodate this change to the statutory bank holidays and to retain the University closure days, a decision has been made to move the closure day from Tuesday 31 May 2022 to Monday 20 December 2021. This is in addition to the three days that were previously communicated above.
