Emeritus Professor Jay G Blumler

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on 30 January 2021, of Emeritus Professor Jay G Blumler, former Professor of Public Communication.

Born in New York in 1924, Jay served as a Russian interpreter for the US Army in Berlin during the Second World War. 

He came to the UK in 1949 to teach political theory at Ruskin College, Oxford, and stayed there until 1963 when he was appointed by the University of Leeds as Granada Television Research Fellow. 

In 1966 he established the Centre for Television Research and became the University’s first Professor of Public Communication in 1978. He retired in 1989, at which time he became an Emeritus Professor.

Once the funeral details are known, arrangements will be made for the flag on the Parkinson Building to be flown at half-mast in his memory.
