January arrangements – a message from Roger Gair

Roger Gair, University Secretary, wrote to all colleagues on Friday 4 December about the Government’s newly published guidance on the return of students for the spring term.

Dear colleagues,

On Wednesday, the Government’s guidance on students returning for the spring term was published. This guidance says that the return of students for the spring term should be staggered over five weeks to minimise transmission risks from the mass movement of students, with practical and placement students returning first. It also says that all students should be offered testing on return to University.

We are considering how we will implement these guidelines, and will be sharing arrangements with colleagues and students next week. In the meantime, we can confirm the following:

  • We are assuming that the guidance is for all taught students and therefore PGR students can return as planned.
  • Students arriving from overseas in January do not need to alter their travel arrangements and can travel to Leeds as planned.
  • Students staying in Leeds over the holiday period, or those who need to return early in January for other reasons (such as not having access to alternative accommodation, facilities, study spaces, or for health reasons) can come back to campus at any time.

We will be sending a message similar to this one to all students today.

At present, no further action is required from colleagues.

With best wishes,

Roger Gair

University Secretary
