One of these subjects – Food Science – sees us sitting proudly in top spot for the second year in a row. And four further subjects – Accounting and Finance; Art and Design; Marketing; and Communications and Media Studies – has Leeds ranked in the top five.

The Complete University Guide 2021, published today (Tuesday 9 June), also positions Leeds at 16th overall.

Professor Tom Ward, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Student Education, said: “The core of our mission at the University of Leeds is enabling our students to engage successfully with the research-based educational environment we provide.

“To this end, the staff and students at Leeds are deeply committed to enabling an excellent student education experience, and I’d like to thank them all for their hard work.

“Colleagues who teach and support learning are at the heart of this endeavour, working in partnership with our students to provide an inspiring, challenging and supportive community, which enables them to realise their potential and achieve their ambitions. We see the impact of this dedicated effort throughout the student journey, from application to graduation and on to future careers.”

High climbers

The 2021 guide uses a range of criteria in the ranking, including student satisfaction, graduate prospects and completion, as well as investment in facilities.

Big climbers for Leeds include:

  • Civil Engineering – up 10 places to 11th
  • Sport Science – up four places to 11th
  • Drama, Dance and Cinematics – up eight places to 13th; and
  • Politics – up five places to 19th.

There was also good news for languages at Leeds, with Italian, German and Iberian courses all climbing in to the top 20.

Professor Alan Mackie, Head of the School of Food Science and Nutrition, said: “We are clearly delighted that we remain the UK’s leading School of Food Science and Nutrition.

“We believe it is because we put the student experience at the heart of what we do. We aim to provide courses recognising the international scope of food science and nutrition, to recruit students of the highest national and international quality, and to produce graduates that are knowledgeable, critical and innovative, and are the leading such graduates in the world.”
