Tony Squires

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on 16 May 2020, of Tony Squires, Customer Services Assistant in the Print and Copy Bureau.

The following tribute has been contributed by his friends and colleagues.

Born on 14 February 1960, he was named Anthony Valentine Squires, marking the fact he was born on Valentine’s Day.

Tony joined the University of Leeds on 8 May 1979, when he was just 19 years old, in the Leeds University Union on a Youth Training Scheme as a student working in the Print and Copying Department.

Following the successful completion of his training scheme he was given a permanent contract with Leeds University Union as a Printer. The operation was merged with Media Services (now Print & Copy Bureau) where his contract was transferred from Leeds University Union to the University of Leeds.

He was appointed as a Customer Service Assistant within the Print & Copy Bureau, working in the print area.

He celebrated 40 years’ service to the University, which was marked at the December graduation event in 2019. Being a member of staff for such a momentous time, he was able to celebrate many landmarks from his 21st  to 60th birthdays.

His great hobby was music, which was a big part of his life. He had a wide, eclectic taste from rap to rock and saw many famous artists live. In his spare time he was a reputable DJ, travelling the country with a massive following of supporters. He even had his own radio slot on Kiss FM. One of his big musical passions was northern soul and he attended events regularly in Europe and the UK.

He was well-known for his big smile and gentle ways. Tony will be greatly missed by many friends and colleagues.

Tony’s funeral will be held at 2.20pm on Thursday 4 June 2020 at Lawnswood Crematorium, Otley Road, Adel, LS16 8AA, on which day the flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast in his memory.
