The fifth instalment of the hugely popular open day, which is designed to engage the public in the pioneering studies undertaken at Leeds by showcasing some of our world-leading research in an easily accessible format, was due to be held on Saturday 28 March.

But given the hands-on nature of many of the displays and the practical issues this creates in relation to Government advice in helping contain the spread of coronavirus (covid-19), a decision has been made to switch the date to Saturday 10 October.

Dr Alexa Ruppertsberg, Head of Public Engagement with Research at Leeds, said: “Be Curious is all about being hands on, giving visitors young and old the chance to experience how we conduct research at the University up close and personal.

We always consider the health of our staff, students and visitors above all else. Government advice to help contain the spread of coronavirus is to wash your hands or use sanitiser gel when in contact with objects in the public domain. But given we had a record 60 displays planned as part of Be Curious in what is a highly interactive event, this wouldn’t have been practical

“We appreciate many colleagues have put a lot of effort into preparing their displays for the event, and we’re hopeful most, if not all, will be able to carry this across to the new date.

Free, interactive, family-friendly fun will once again be the order of the day at Be Curious, with stalls for all ages running from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 10 October.

Discussions are ongoing to see if one of the highlights – the Deep Ocean Lab event with YouTuber and BBC TV and radio presenter, Greg Foot – can take place on the new date, and those who booked free tickets will be contacted shortly.

A full list of attractions will appear on For Staff and the Be Curious website nearer the date, together with a link to download the programme and a map of events.

See our coronavirus (covid-19) website for general advice for staff and students.
