Help celebrate LGBT+ History Month 2020
A packed programme of events has been planned on campus during February to celebrate LGBT+ History Month.
Parkinson Building is being lit up in full rainbow colours to mark the beginning of LGBT+ History Month 2020
The national initiative focusses on LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi and trans) + history, as well as the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements.
At Leeds, our core values of inclusiveness and community are at the heart of everything we do. Our commitment to progressing inclusion is demonstrated through the University’s Equality and Inclusion (E&I) Framework.
During recent years, the University has worked closely with our active LGBT+ Staff Network, students’ union officers and colleagues across the organisation to progress LGBT+ inclusion and create an open, inclusive environment for all, which is why we’re encouraging all staff and students to get involved in the exciting events programme.
Sabiha Patel, Head of Equality and Inclusion, said: “It is important we remember the whole year round that our University is a place where everyone is welcomed, and that we all have a role to play in creating an environment where everyone can be themselves.”
Colleagues are invited to help celebrate LGBT+ History Month 2020 on campus
There is a range of events happening across campus during February, led by the LGBT+ Staff Network. This includes acclaimed visitor and keynote speaker, Dr Mo Moulton, Senior Lecturer in the History Department at the University of Birmingham. Dr Moulton will be talking about ‘Staging a Queer Life: A Historian’s Perspective’.

Parkinson is also being lit up in full rainbow colours on Monday 3 February to mark the beginning of LGBT+ History Month 2020. Share your photos of the iconic building on Twitter using the hashtag #LGBTHM2020.
In line with this year’s theme – ‘Poetry, Prose and Plays’ – the University Library has been asking colleagues for their recommendations for LGBT+ books or texts. These will be included in a blog that will be shared with staff and students in February.
Leeds City Museum is also hosting a free event from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Saturday 8 February, as part of a dedicated national network of host cities, showcasing hundreds of years of LGBT+ culture and communities.
