Have your say about campus security

You can still have your say about campus security as we seek to further improve our services.

Feedback is still being sought to further improve security across campus

Last summer, we offered colleagues the chance to give feedback through the Campus Support Services Satisfaction Survey that looked at how our security services are managed across campus.

Recognising there’s always room for improvement, we’re still keen to hear your views. This can be done by:

  • attending a drop-in session – these take place every Tuesday and Thursday, 11am-2pm in LUU’s foyer; or
  • emailing your comments directly to the team – urgent matters will receive a response within 24 hours, or within five working days for less urgent enquiries.

This feedback is really important to us and often results in real, positive change on campus. Examples include:

Team changes

We recognise from feedback that knowledge and having consistent staff on shift provides reassurance and a better quality of service. We acted on this last year by recruiting nine further staff and returning, in main, to an in-house team. We also have a full-time training officer, responsible for delivering a robust induction training programme, refresher training and continual development of our officers throughout the year.

We are also delighted to have increased our dog handling provision to every shift and have four new canine recruits – Ruby, Reggie, Enzo and Tia – who are undertaking their first year of West Yorkshire Police Dog Training. Please look out for them on campus.

Creating new roles

We’ve increased the level of management support in our service by introducing new duty operations management roles within the Security Service. The four Duty Operations Managers are each responsible for a team of security officers on a day-to-day basis. Scheduled meetings with the Deputy Security Services Manager enables them to help us review and improve our processes, discuss feedback and continuously improve, whilst also receiving the latest information from the management team.

Security patrols

Security undertakes structured patrols across campus, with officers taking pre-planned routes to make sure they engage with staff and students. They will also introduce themselves to reception and front-of-house staff as they patrol inside their buildings. We recognise colleagues feel reassured seeing our officers out on patrol and we hope staff will get more opportunities to know who the officers are for their buildings. This will also ensure a consistent level of service for colleagues across campus, as they will be interacting with the same well-trained, motivated and friendly security officers each day.

Improving communications

The Deputy Security Services Manager will be meeting with the Facilities Manager of each faculty during the next few months to discuss a range of security matters. These meetings will include explaining the recent improvements to security and informing them about the availability of the critical incidents poster, which gives guidance on how to react in the unlikely event of an emergency on campus. Locking and access to buildings on campus will also be discussed, as this was an area of concern highlighted during the recent survey.
