Riding high after wheely good effort!

Pedal power saw the University riding high after we won a bespoke cycling competition!

We are celebrating success in the annual Cycle September competition

Saddle-up for Cycle September. September 2019

Cycle September is a nationwide initiative hosted by Love to Ride and City Connect. It’s a fun, free competition, where local and national organisations compete to see which workplace and departments can get the most staff on their bikes.

Nearly 200 colleagues saddled up for the challenge, including ten new riders, clocking up an impressive 25,184 miles between them. This saw us claim top spot in West Yorkshire and seventh place nationally.

Romain Cames, Sustainability Bike Hub Co-ordinator, said: “We are thrilled to have taken part in Cycle September again this year.

“The University promotes cycling as a sustainable travel option to our staff and students, as it is an integral part of our Sustainability Strategy, which is why we are delighted to have won first place in West Yorkshire!

“Participating members of staff are reporting great health and wellbeing benefits, whilst increasing numbers of people are encouraging each other to travel by bike, whether it is commuting to work or for weekend fun.

“Last year we achieved the Gold Standard Bike Friendly Business Accreditation, and to ensure we maintained our high level of commitment to cycling, we have continued to expand our range of bike-friendly initiatives, such as the Sustainability Service’s Bike Hub, which offers cycle hire, maintenance and advice.”

The promotion of travel by bike, public transport or on foot is one of the central tenets of the Travel Plan 2019-2021, and is an essential part of the principles adopted by the University to tackle the global climate crisis.
