Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics membership call

New members are being sought for a leading interdisciplinary research centre.

Membership of Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics comes with a wide range of benefits

Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics membership call. October 2019

The Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics (LIFD) brings together the expertise of more than 200 members of staff, postdoctoral research associates and students at the University with teaching and research interests in fluids.

It acts as an organising centre for fluid dynamics, both nationally and internationally. LIFD brings this expertise together to empower research, enable excellence in research-led teaching and develop strong partnerships with academic, industry and non-profit user partners worldwide.

It is yet another example of the excellent interdisciplinary research being undertaken at Leeds.

The aim is to establish LIFD as a world-leading centre for fluid dynamics, being recognised internationally for research and training and thereby playing a substantial part in cementing Leeds in the top 100 universities worldwide.

Now, LIFD is seeking to recruit even more members to help further its objectives.

LIFD Director, Professor Steve Tobias, said: “UK Fluids is a strong community and Leeds is at the forefront of recent activities.

“LIFD will further cement the UK’s position internationally in fluids as it will help to consolidate critical mass in this area.

“It is imperative we continue and extend this collaborative research framework to secure Leeds’ high standing in fluid dynamics in the UK and internationally.”

Research themes

LIFD research themes include:

  • Energy and Transport
  • Environmental Flows
  • Geophysical and Astrophysical Flows
  • Biomedical Flows; and
  • Industrial processes.

LIFD offers opportunities for visiting researchers and professorships, consultancy, student sponsorship and access to facilities, as well as for potential summer schools or research workshops to be delivered at Leeds.

Membership of LIFD and the supporting subgroups is open to all fluid dynamics researchers (staff and PhD) at Leeds. These sub-groups include the computational, MSc, PhD experimental and industry/impact groups.

Membership benefits

There are a wide range of benefits on offer for members, including:

  • association with an internationally-renowned fluid dynamics research institute
  • networking and collaborating with fluids researchers from all Faculties involved in LIFD
  • contributing to setting the strategic direction of LIFD for the benefit of the fluids community at Leeds, including involvement in decisions on future support infrastructure, equipment and facilities
  • being directly invited to relevant events – meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences (see below)
  • receiving updates about funding and employment opportunities; and
  • opportunities to access funding provided by LIFD.

Upcoming events

Among a range of LIFD events being planned are:

  • the LIFD Colloquium on Wednesday 6 November 2019, featuring keynote speaker Professor Beth Wingate; and
  • the LIFD Annual Lecture on Monday 10 February 2020, featuring keynote speaker Professor Alfio Quarteroni (full details TBC).
