Exciting new events announced for National Inclusion Week 2019
Three extra events have been added to the exciting programme already planned to celebrate National Inclusion Week 2019 on campus.
A Diversity Café will open this year’s National Inclusion Week celebrations on campus
Running from 23-29 September, this will be the third year running Leeds has taken part in the national initiative. This year’s theme is ‘Everyday Inclusion – Celebrate and Inspire’.
Our vision is to make Leeds a beacon of excellence for Equality and Inclusion in the higher education sector.
Staff and students are invited to attend a wide range of initiatives on offer, which highlight the distinctively international and diverse community at Leeds.
A packed programme of events was announced earlier this month. Now, three more have been added to the roster due to the high level of interest, including an opening event for the week of celebrations.
Monday 23 September
Opening event – Diversity Café with the staff networks, 11am to 1pm, Business School, Maurice Keyworth SR (1.04)
We’re pleased to confirm the opening event for National Inclusion Week is our Diversity Café – an opportunity to meet representatives from our staff networks and hear about the work they do, social and networking activities they host and their plans for the future.
Refreshments will be available throughout. While this is an informal, drop-in style café event, which is open to all colleagues and PGRs, if you do have any dietary requirements, please use the booking system to provide this information in advance (see below for details).
Tuesday 24 September
Chinese name pronunciation, 10am to noon, Baines Wing SR (1.06)
Due to the overwhelming popularity of this workshop, we’ve added a second session to our programme.
Have you ever wondered what the correct pronunciation of the last name Zhang is? You may be surprised to learn the ‘Zh’ sound is actually more like a ‘J’ sound (as in the word John).
Join us and learn tips and strategies that will help you better pronounce the names of Chinese students and colleagues. The workshop is led by a native Chinese-speaker, Joyce Cai, who works at the University Language Centre.
Participants will leave this one-hour session able to comfortably pronounce the names of students and colleagues from mainland China.

Friday 27 September
Introduction to Digital Accessibility, 12.30-1pm, OD&PL SR1 (1.34)
OD&PL has put on an additional session, exploring how simple changes to our digital practice can benefit everyone. Booking is not required in advance.
