Learning Analytics Code of Practice: have your say
We are seeking your views about a proposed new Code of Practice for learning analytics.
Learning analytics is "the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for the purposes of understanding and optimising learning and the environments in which it occurs." (International Conference on Learning Analytics, 2011)
We currently collect lots of data from students, including attendance, assessment, Minerva usage, lecture capture views, library usage and many others. These sets of data are viewed in isolation, if at all, by a range of colleagues and sometimes students. This means that some colleagues are already engaged in learning analytics. At the moment, this is happening in a variety of ways, with differing consideration of the ethical, data and personal issues raised.
Over the last six months, we have been working hard to define the principles that we want to apply to our use of learning analytics, as we develop our vision and strategy in this area. We believe that learning analytics can support student success, and we want to engage with our students’ data ethically, transparently and in partnership with them.
We have produced a proposed Learning Analytics Code of Practice and Strategy which is now available for formal consultation with colleagues and students. Once agreed, this Code of Practice will apply to all use of learning data that we collect and process for all our taught students, and its implementation will impact all teaching staff and students. We believe that effective use of learning analytics will benefit colleagues and students, by helping us make informed decisions to support our students, and to enhance the quality of the education we offer at Leeds.
During this consultation, we would like your feedback on both the proposed strategy and code of practice, and encourage you to think about how your current use of learning data may be impacted by the implementation of the code of practice.

Sharing your views
You can provide feedback in a range of ways during this consultation:
1. Speak to individuals (e.g. Director of Student Education, Pro-Dean for Student Education, Head of School, student representative) who sit on the Faculty Taught Student Education Committee (FTSEC), so that your views can be fed back via the student education governance process. The proposed code and strategy documents will be discussed at all of the FTSECS between 7 and 13 June 2019.
2. Attend an open meeting to give your feedback directly. These meetings are taking place in room G.12, Clothworkers North Building at the following times, and are open to all colleagues and students:
- Monday 3 June 10-11am
- Tuesday 4 June 1-2pm
- Thursday 6 June 4-5pm
The deadline for providing feedback on these documents is 5pm Friday 14 June 2019.
