Celebrate Our Staff – April 2019
Here we celebrate our colleagues’ achievements across the University this past month.
Malcolm Dawson, Head of Security, has been elected to the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) Board of Directors, in the USA. His 3 year term of office will start at the Installation Ceremony on 28 June 2019 in Vancouver, Canada as part of the 2019 IACLEA Annual Conference.
Malcolm has over 42 years of police and security experience and has been at the University for 27 years. He has also been an active member of the Association of University Chief Security Officers (AUCSO) – the leading organisation for security professionals working in higher and further education in the UK and Europe – for over 25 years, serving previously as the Northern Regional Chair and on the AUCSO Executive Committee.
Malcolm said: “I am truly humbled and honoured to be elected for this high profile International Regional Director role and can’t wait to get involved starting at the conference in June. Collaboration and keeping people involved, listening, sharing information and communicating well with members, will be at the forefront of everything I do.”
Of Malcolm’s appointment, Joanna Hynes, Deputy Director of Campus Support Services (CSS), said: “CSS are thrilled that Malcolm has been appointed to this very important role. We know he will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to IACLEA and we are also looking forward to how Malcolm can share the continuous professional development he gains through this relationship with IACLEA back here at Leeds.”

Chris Gale, Professor
of Cardiovascular Medicine and Head of Clinical and Population Sciences
Department, has been appointed as Interim Co-Director of the Leeds Institute for Data
Analytics (LIDA).
Since LIDA’s inception five years ago, the technology and data landscape has evolved very rapidly. Professor Gale will lead the development of a new vision for biomedical informatics and the supporting infrastructure for an initial term of 6 months.
Professor Gale said: “I am delighted to take on this important role at this critical time in health data research – Leeds has real strength in data analytics and this is an excellent opportunity to build on the great work to date and create a world-leading centre. Given the increasing volume and availability of population-wide structured and unstructured health information, the reality of data driven discovery for patient benefit is upon us.”

Dr Laura King,
Associate Professor at the School of History, has received the British Academy
Rising Star Engagement Award for her project entitled ‘Remembering the dead: artist-academic
collaborations’. The award is held for a 12-month period and provides funding of up to £15,000.
Dr King said: "I'm delighted to have been awarded this funding, mostly because it allows me to keep working with the wonderful Grief Series. The award sees us broadening out this collaboration to involve other historians and artists from Mexico, which is exciting. This kind of collaboration between academics and creative professionals is really stimulating and hugely beneficial."

A total of six academic members of staff and visiting faculty are to be awarded medals at the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) 50 Years Celebration at the upcoming Academy of International Business Annual Meeting in Copenhagen, in June.
Peter Buckley,
Professor of International Business from Leeds University Business School
(LUBS), has been awarded the Platinum Medal for the most frequent contributor to JIBS in the first 50 years. It was the only Platinum Medal to be awarded.
On receiving the medal, Peter said: “The award of the ‘JIBS 50’ Platinum Medal is deeply gratifying on a personal level as it covers the whole span of my work and the evolution of thought throughout my career. I hope it will inspire others and boost the necessary resilience in international business researchers to advance the frontiers of knowledge in our increasingly important research domain.”
Alongside Peter, Tamer Cavusgil has been awarded a Gold
Medal (for scholars with at least 11 substantive contributions in JIBS) while Jeremy Clegg, Tomas Hult, Jim Love and
Elizabeth Rose have all been awarded
Silver Medals (for scholars with at least 5 substantive contributions in JIBS).
Emmanuella Plakoyiannaki,
Professor of International Business from LUBS, has been elected as Conference
Co-Chair for the seventh International
Conference on Contemporary Marketing Issues (ICCMI), taking place on 10 –
12 July 2019 in Crete, Greece. Emmanuella was elected due to her long
experience and impact in the international academic community. Her expertise on
International Business enriches the disciplinary focus of the seventh ICCMI
and her involvement as Conference Co-Chair means that Leeds is one of only
three UK institutions to have co-organised the annual ICCMI.
Emmanuella said: “The seventh ICCMI critically considers and advances knowledge around current challenges that researchers and practitioners are currently facing in the areas of marketing and international business. It promotes discussion and networking opportunities between academia and practice and attracts participants with diverse expertise in business, management and social sciences. I am delighted to be part of this interesting event!”

Dr Sally Russell and Dr Chandra Balijepalli from the School
of Earth and Environment have been awarded fellowships from the Higher Education
Academy (HEA) for their commitment to teaching excellence.
Dr Russell said: “I am really grateful that the HEA has awarded me a Senior Fellowship, recognising the positive impact that my teaching, mentoring, and leadership practice has on others. Colleagues and students constantly inspire and challenge me to keep improving, so it’s been a valuable process to reflect and acknowledge that the positive impact goes in both directions."
Of his award, Dr Balijepalli said: “I am excited with the achievement of fellowship which gives me a recognition for the approaches that I follow in my teaching and learning practice. I am looking forward to improving my teaching practice further by engaging with continuing professional development opportunities.”
Harriet Thew, Postgraduate
Researcher and Graduate Teaching Associate in the Sustainability Research
Institute, has also been made a Fellow of the HEA.
She said: “I am delighted to have become a Fellow of the HEA. It is a real pleasure to be recognised for my commitment to teaching and learning. The application process encouraged deeper engagement with the pedagogical literature and reflection on my teaching practice. It been a very worthwhile experience which I highly recommend to all teaching staff.”
