Emeritus Professor David Sugden - Funeral details

Further to the notice on 13 March, the funeral service of Professor Sugden is to be private. However, a memorial event at the University is being arranged, and details will be published in due course.

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death of Emeritus Professor David Sugden, former Professor of Special Needs in Education in the School of Education, on 13 March 2019.

David was appointed Lecturer in Physical Education at Leeds in 1977. He moved to the School of Education in 1981; was promoted in 1985 to Senior Lecturer and then to Reader in 1991; and he was appointed to Professor of Special Needs in Education in 1992.

David’s leadership qualities were much in demand:  he was variously Dean of the Faculty of Education, Chair of his School, Acting Dean of Medicine, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (1998-2004), Acting Principal of Bretton Hall (2000-01) and Acting Vice-Chancellor (2004), later serving as Dean of the Faculty of Education, Social Sciences and Law.

David retired in 2010, but continued to pursue his research and teaching, and to help the University in many other ways.

Formidably productive in both teaching and research, with a genuinely international reputation, David always made time to mentor younger colleagues, which was typical of his unflinching loyalty to – and passion for – the University of Leeds.

The University's tribute to David can be found here.
