Professor Ian Ward, FRS

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on 5 November, of Emeritus Professor Ian Ward, former Cavendish Professor in the School of Physics.

Ian came to the University in 1969 as Professor of Physics, and became Cavendish Professor in 1987. He chaired the Department between 1975 and 1978, and again between 1987 and 1989, at which time he became the first Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Polymer Science and Technology, holding the position until his retirement in 1994.

Upon his retirement he became an Emeritus Professor, but continued his association with the institution with characteristic energy and rigour, working on papers with colleagues in the Soft Matter Physics Group. Celebrations combining his 90th birthday and the annual Ian Ward Lecture were held in April.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret.

The funeral service of Emeritus Professor Ian Ward will take place at 11am on Thursday 15 November at Lawnswood Crematorium, Otley Road, Adel, LS16 8AA. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of Ian may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, a box for which will be available at the service. Any enquiries to J. E. Spence Funeral Service, Tel 0113 2682842.

Refreshments will be available afterwards at The Village Hotel, Otley Road, Headingley.

Ian is survived by his wife, Margaret, his three children and 5 grandchildren.
