Celebrate Our Staff – October 2018
Here we celebrate our colleagues’ achievements across the University this past month.
Dr Amanda Maycock,
Associate Professor in Climate Dynamics at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science (ICAS),
has received a Philip
Leverhulme Prize 2018 and an Arne Richter Award for Outstanding
Early Career Scientists from the European
Geophysical Union for her work on Earth’s climate.
Dr Maycock said: “I am very fortunate to have been supported throughout my career by many wonderful mentors and colleagues, and to have been offered the freedom to pursue my academic interests in a supportive environment.”

Dr Saurabh Lal, Research Fellow at the School of Biomedical
Sciences, has received the Heinz-Mittelmeier Research Award for Applications of
Ceramic Implants in Endoprosthetics from the German Orthopedic Association
DGOOC for his outstanding research and development work. The findings of Dr
Lal’s research are important to better understand the immunological response to
wear particles in the clinical context.
Dr Lal said: “I am extremely honoured to receive such an important research award in the field of bioceramics and their applications in arthroplasty.”

Professor Animesh Jha, from the School of Chemical and Process
Engineering, has been elected as a Fellow
Member of The Optical Society. He has been honoured
specifically for significant achievements in the engineering and
development of novel glass and glass-ceramic materials, and devices for
photonic and bio-photonic applications, as well as for actively serving the
optical community.
Professor Jha said: "My election to OSA Fellowship has been a great honour for me – it is a testimony of the rigor of the peer-review process for achievements, which the OSA stands for and which it continues to support for the last 102 years. The Fellowship recognizes achievements in research on Inorganic Glasses for Photonics, Laser Materials and Applications of Lasers in Dental & Bone Tissue Engineering, Diagnostics, and for promoting skills training."

Professor Steven Freear, from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his accomplishments as an Editor-in-Chief
of the IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control.
He has hugely improved the success of the journal by halving both manuscript
processing time and production costs, and increasing impact factor by 80%.
