Bodington Cycle Circuit and Brownlee Centre: one year on

Come and experience one of the longest cycle circuits in the country, situated on the University’s Bodington Playing Fields.

Bodington Circuit July 2018

Opened to the public in summer 2017 along with the Brownlee Centre, the Bodington Cycle Circuit provides safe traffic free environment for cyclists of all abilities.

Just three miles north of Leeds city centre, the Circuit has become a base for both elite and beginner activity, hosting different activities and sessions throughout the week. Stretching one mile in length, it is one of the longest cycle circuits in England.

Gawaine Mackenzie-Hogg, Outdoor Operational Manager who leads the development of usage of the site, says: “We have some excellent staff now in place with the Circuit, and continue to make improvements. It’s fantastic to see an increase in use by staff, students and the community as a whole.

“We have also had a great local community response to our junior parkruns which are held on Sundays, and are delighted that the Brownlee Foundation have now launched their junior duathlon on a Wednesday night.”

Regular Pay and Pedal sessions welcome all individuals each week to drop in and a have a go. The Circuit also hosts Breeze Rides, a scheme which encourages women and girls (aged 16+) to ride for fun, get fit and improve their cycling skills. Working with British Cycling, these sessions are facilitated by a team of local leaders who answer questions, provide guidance and help make the most of your time.

The Circuit also hosts a disability hub for the region, which provides dedicated para-cycling coaching sessions. Led by British Cycling Go-Ride coaches and supported by local volunteers, the sessions help riders to achieve a variety of goals including improving fitness and confidence, rehabilitation from injury and training for competitions. Participants have access to adapted bikes which include 6 tandems, 3 trikes and 3 hand-cycles.
