Supporting trans staff and students

Colleagues seeking to support trans staff and students can refer to Guidance for Trans Staff and Students.

The Guidance – published earlier this year by the Equality Policy Unit (EPU) – aims to provide information on the practical aspects of helping people to transition or wishing to transition, such as change of name and gender, use of toilets and changing facilities, taking part in field trips, etc.

It should be particularly valuable to managers, personal tutors and student support colleagues. EPU is particularly keen for colleagues who use the resource to provide them with feedback on its content and value, so that it can be updated regularly as appropriate.

The Guidance is phase two of EPU’s work on this equality area, and supports the implementation of the University’s Trans Policy, which was approved in February 2017. Our next  phase of work in this area is to consider training for groups of staff to raise awareness of the lived experiences of trans people, or those considering transitioning, in a University setting, and how our practices may be enhanced to make our community even more inclusive.

Please contact Sarah Sutherland in the Equality Policy Unit for further information.
