Amendment to Statute VII

The Privy Council has ratified the amendment of Statute VII agreed by the University’s governing body, the Council, last May.

We have now received confirmation that the Privy Council has ratified the amendment of Statute VII agreed by the University’s governing body, the Council, last May.

We have been working for some time to reform Statute VII and its related Ordinances, which set out the procedures that apply to academic and academic related (professional & managerial) staff for the resolution of grievances, and for dismissal, removal from office and redundancy.

This Privy Council ratification means that we are now discussing matters with the relevant trade union (UCU) and will proceed to implement the new employment procedures.

We believe these new procedures are an improvement over the existing arrangements. They:

  • provide greater protections for the principle of academic freedom,
  • reflect good, modern employment practice in keeping with the ACAS code of practice, and
  • are designed to be readily understandable, transparent, and to ensure fair and timely decisions are reached following thorough consideration of issues.

We will be writing to academic and academic related (professional & managerial) staff in the near future to provide further details and next steps.

Updates will be added to the Reform of Statute VII section.
