Changes to data protection legislation

The Data Protection Act 1998 will be replaced by the new General Data Protection Regulation in May 2018.

The new law will affect some data collection, use and storage practices across the institution. For most staff, changes brought about by the new Regulations will not be significant.

The University has developed a compliance plan which is being overseen by the University’s Information Protection Group, and there is more information about this on a new, dedicated data protection web site.

The first step for you is to ensure you have completed your compulsory online Information Security Essentials training.

OD&PL will provide further training on data protection issues, including the new Regulations.

If you have any general questions in the interim please contact Rebecca Messenger-Clark in the Secretariat (r.messenger-clark@adm.leeds.ac.uk) or the University Legal Adviser, Adrian Slater.
