Leeds undergraduate research going from strength to strength
The benefits of the University’s commitment to teaching in a research-intensive environment have shown in recent undergraduate research success.
Laidlaw Scholarships
More undergraduate students than ever applied for a Laidlaw Undergraduate Research and Leadership Scholarship this year. Given the high standard of applications, competition was fierce. A record number of 31 undergraduate students from across all faculties were awarded a scholarship.
Each will receive a grant of £6,000, funded by Lord Laidlaw, enabling them to take part in two six-week periods of research project work. They will have a dedicated lead supervisor and advice and support from the wider research group.
They will also have the chance to take part in a range of activities designed to improve their project planning, communication and leadership skills.
British Conference of Undergraduate Research
Leeds took 29 undergraduate students to the BCUR conference this year – more than any other institution.
The BCUR is just like any other academic conference. There are spoken papers, lectures, poster presentations and workshops — but they are delivered by undergraduate students presenting work they have done either as part of their course or as part of an internship.
Support from the Footsteps Fund has enabled growing numbers of our undergraduate students to attend the conference every year, so they can gain confidence from having the backing of Leeds staff and their fellow students.
