IT Security – what you can do
You have probably read or heard about the computer virus that affected the NHS and other large organisations over the weekend. Make sure you know what you can do to keep safe from such attacks.
The WannaCry virus that affected computers across the world at the end of last week and over the weekend targets computers running Microsoft Windows, encrypts the data on them and then blackmails users to recover access to their files.
IT constantly works to keep the University network safe from such attacks: a security update applied earlier this year alongside other precautions put in place over the last few years should protect the network from this virus. However, some devices may still be vulnerable and, of course, new malicious software attacks are being released all the time.
While the University does what it can to support staff, keeping you and the University safe from these attacks can never be something that is entirely done for you. There are things that you need to do to reduce the risks. For example:
- Make sure you have done the Information Security Essentials training course, which is mandatory for all staff.
- Encrypting information on a laptop, which is also mandatory.
- Keep up-to-date with the advice on the IT website on issues including:
o phishing emails and viruses
o using personal devices
o keeping University data secure
