Leeds Team win Excellence in Patient Care Award for Innovation
Professor John Young, Drs Andrew Clegg and Elizabeth Teale (Elderly Care and Rehabilitation Unit) are celebrating their win of a Royal College of Physicians' (RCP) Excellence in Patient Care Award.
The award is for their development of the Electronic Frailty Index (eFI). The eFI represents a major, innovative advance in the care of older people because, for the first time, it enables identification of frailty using existing primary care data without the need for a resource-intensive clinical assessment. The eFI has been implemented in the leading UK primary care electronic health record systems and so is available across the UK. The reach and impact of this project is illustrated by the fact that the research paper was the most downloaded and cited paper in the journal Age and Ageing in 2016.
In 2017 the RCP Excellence in Patient Care Awards aimed to recognise, celebrate and promote the work that physicians do to improve patient-centred care through education, policy, clinical practice and research.
The awards ceremony was held at the RCP’s annual conference and the winners received an RCP Excellence in Patient Care Award plaque, as well as an award of £1,000.
The Elderly Care and Rehabilitation Unit is an academic unit of the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences. It is based at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the Bradford Institute of Health Research, Bradford Royal Infirmary.
