From making new connections with industry to delivering impact through innovative new products and technologies, Nexus provides an opportunity to realise the full potential of our innovative research base.

Hear from Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation Lisa Roberts and Director of Research and Innovation Development Ceri Williams on how Nexus will help:

  • drive a step change in growing and diversifying collaborative research and innovation activity
  • improve research impact
  • make mutually valuable connections, forming research-led partnerships locally, nationally and internationally
  • understand and respond to external public and private sector funding opportunities

Recent announcements have underlined the importance of high-quality, university-led research for future economic growth, which is why Nexus, the University’s new innovation and enterprise centre, is a vital tool in helping us to capitalise on these and other opportunities.

The government’s recently published green paper – Building on our Industrial Strategy – includes proposals to enhance support for research and innovation, and indicates an expansion of research funding to universities. The paper outlines ‘challenge areas’ that should be further enhanced and supported. To address these ‘challenges’, the government plans to provide an extra £4.7bn of funding to support research and development, and will establish a new funding stream – the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.

The government also commits to “helping businesses start and grow” and to enabling businesses and universities to collaborate in research to drive innovation.

Our new innovation centre, Nexus, is designed to directly address such challenges and priorities. By catalysing a culture of collaboration, innovation and impact, both across the University and beyond, Nexus will help bring our ideas to the wider world as well as addressing live commercial, societal and environmental challenges.

Nexus embodies the outward-facing approach the University is taking to grow and prosper in an increasingly competitive, inter-connected global environment.
