Dr Anna Upchurch

Colleagues will be sorry to hear that Dr Anna Upchurch, lecturer in Cultural Policy, School of Performance and Cultural Industries, died in hospital on Wednesday 23 November after a short illness.

Anna will be sorely missed by colleagues and students who had the pleasure of working with her.

Anna, a US citizen with an established career in arts management and policy in the United States, came to the UK to begin her PhD at Warwick University. She joined the University of Leeds in 2009 and over the next seven years did much to raise the profile of cultural policy research across the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures.

Her research investigated the intellectual history of arts policy in the UK and North America, focusing on the involvement of private philanthropy in both countries. Her latest monograph, The Origins of the Arts Council Movement: Philanthropy and Policy, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in the week she passed away.

Her funeral will be held on Friday 9 December in Leeds.

An obituary is being prepared.
