Extra day's holiday

All staff have been given an additional day of annual leave as a reward for all the hard work that contributed to our winning The Times/Sunday Times title 'University of the Year 2017'.

The text of the Vice-Chancellor's email announcing the extra leave can be found below:

'Dear colleague

We should all take great pride in being named University of the Year 2017 by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide. I was particularly pleased by the judges' assertion that we "prioritise the needs of students first and last" and by the way in which they highlighted our unfailing commitment to widening participation in higher education.  We also continued to strengthen our position in the Times and Sunday Times league table of UK universities, securing an overall satisfaction rate of 90% from our students and an outstanding level of support for the students' union and our library service.

I recognise that these achievements are the result of a great deal of dedication, commitment and sheer hard work by all staff across the University. It is your appetite for continuous improvement of student education, research and innovation, and the wide range of support services that make the institution tick on a day to day basis and make this a great University.

To recognise your contribution and the collective commitment of all staff, an additional day of annual leave (pro rata as appropriate), will be added to your existing entitlement for the holiday year 2016-17.  I understand that this is a small token of appreciation but it comes with my sincere thanks for all that you do to ensure the progress of the University, sometimes against the background of a tough external environment.

With renewed thanks and warm good wishes,

Alan Langlands

Vice-Chancellor'
