Professor David Edward Jenkins

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death of Emeritus Professor David Edward Jenkins.

A man of many accomplishments, he directed both the Humanum (an ambitious programme set up by the World Council of Churches in Geneva) and the William Temple Foundation in Manchester, as well as being a popular tutor and fellow at Queen's College, Oxford and Professor of Theology at the University from 1979 until his enthronement as Bishop of Durham in 1984.

An authentic theologian, he was always ready to speak his mind and sometimes expressed views that caused controversy, both within and outside the Church.

He will also be remembered for his enthusiasm for learning and teaching; his commitment to ecumenicism; and his bold and engaging style.
