Great Food at Leeds (GFAL) wins award for commitment to sustainability

GFAL has won The University Catering Organisation (TUCO) Sustainability in Education award at the Footprint Awards.

Footprint award winner

The Footprint Awards celebrate the work that organisations in the food service industry do to benefit the community and the industry.

GFAL strive to use quality, local and seasonal ingredients and are passionate in the support of Fairtrade. The continued commitment to the Green Impact project, consolidating deliveries to reduce Carbon emissions by an estimated 50kgs per week and ensuring 65% of the main food suppliers are within 40 miles of the University, are just some of the steps GFAL has taken in their commitment to sustainability.

The award judges looked at sourcing, processes, implementation of initiatives and most importantly the measurable advantages gained through responsible practice.

The accolade follows GFAL’s success in the Annual National TUCO Awards earlier this year, in which the service won 4 awards, including Best Marketing Campaign and the TUCO Hygiene Award.

Head of Catering and Conferencing, Bev Kenny, said: “Our success in these recent awards is a real confirmation of the team’s efforts in striving for excellence in all that we do. Our journey towards sustainability is a very exciting one, and one that is embraced through all parts of our service. It is a journey, and not a destination. To be acknowledged and recognised within our peer group brings real pride to the team.”
