Deadline for electoral roll registration

Colleagues are asked to remind students that the deadline to register for the electoral roll is Friday 20 November 2015.

Registration is particularly important this year as Electoral Registration Officers in local authorities will submit their current registers to the Boundary Commission on 1 December. This information will be used as the basis for re-drawing parliamentary seats ahead of the 2020 General Election. The deadline for registration to appear on the December electoral roll is, in most cases, this Friday 20 November.

Universities are no longer permitted to block-register students living in University accommodation and, although we do provide an opportunity to register to vote via our own registration pages, the uptake from students new to Leeds in 2015 has been very low. As a result many of our students will not be on the register after 1 December and the full student population of Leeds will not be taken into account when the boundaries are redrawn.

Universities UK has sent a circular to all universities asking them to support the campaigns being run by their student unions and to use every opportunity to remind students of the deadline and the importance of participating in the democratic process. Leeds University Union (LUU) are running a campaign this week and there will also be a link from the Portal to enable students to register. Colleagues can also provide support by mentioning the deadline at the beginning of lectures and by pointing students to the portal message and the link, which is the quickest way to register.

Students can register to vote here.
