Uni girls can launch week

The launch week for Uni Girls Can will begin on 12 October and aims to inspire female students and staff to engage with sport and physical activity in the context that is right for them.

As part of the launch week Dame Sarah Storey one of Great Britain’s most decorated female Paralympians in history having won 11 Gold Paralympic medals, 21 World Champion Titles and 21 European Champion Titles, and Charlotte Evans MBE Paralympic Gold medalist will be visiting the University.

Sarah will lead a practical spin session, followed by a talk that will look at her amazing sporting career, the barriers she has faced and her new challenge of becoming a mum. Charlotte will also talk about her journey to success and staying positive.

Other talks include Helen Williams (local athlete and Hyde Park Harrier), who completed the worlds oldest and largest ultramarathon (56.1miles), Comrades Marathon in South Africa and just 9 months after giving birth to her second child. Helen will discuss the struggles she faced leading up to the event.

Mother and daughter blog duo veggie runners (Winners of the best blog, The Running Awards 2014), will also be on campus discussing how women are bombarded with messages about how they should behave and look.

On 15 October there will be a panel discussion about the future of female sport and what needs to happen to ensure that it remains a high priority.

The panel includes: Sophie Ashcroft (International Hockey Umpire), Alison Rose (Physiotherapist to Jessica Ennis-Hill) and Laura Beardsmore (three-time world Aikido champion).
