Woman of Achievement 2015 Professor Jenny Jones

A highly accomplished scientist in bioenergy, Professor Jones previously held a senior position in the UK SUPERGEN Bioenergy Hub: a consortium of research institutions and businesses. In 2013, Jenny developed and won the bid to be director of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Bioenergy which, in doing so, brought a third centre to be hosted at the University of Leeds.

Funding for the centre totals over £4m, intended to train 50 PhD students over eight years in this critical field of research. Developing the bid entailed securing funding commitments from dozens of businesses and research institutions, and lead more than 40 academics through a process of identifying expertise and developing an innovative new programme incorporating real-world projects for research students set by industry.

The bid was judged by EPSRC to be outstanding, against fierce competition, and the new centre is one of the few new energy-themed centres created in the present CDT funding round. This is a great academic achievement and recognition of Jenny’s leadership in the field.
