A team from the University created the decision aid booklet, ‘Dialysis: making the right choices for you’ (Bekker HL, Winterbottom A, Gavaruzzi T, Mooney A, Wilkie M, Davies S, Crane D, Tupling K, Mathers N) which was shortlisted for a 2014 BMA Patient Award and rated as a highly commended patient resource by the British Medical Association and their independent patient liaison group.

The Patient Information and Medical Book Awards is an annual event used to ‘encourage excellence in the production and dissemination of accessible, well-designed and clinically balanced patient information’ and ‘to recognise outstanding contributions to the medical literature.’

The awards showcase publications that illustrate the bench-bedside translation of theory and policy into training materials that support the effective and safe practice by professionals as well as promoting the engagement in the delivery of care experienced by patients.

The decision aid has been endorsed by the European Renal Best Practice Association (ERBP) and was produced in conjunction with colleagues at NHS Hospitals Trust, Leeds, Sheffield and Stafford. It is now available as a download at www.kidneyresearchuk.org/DialysisDecisionAid

A review for the book said: 'This is a great resource and meets the needs of the audience for the purpose very well. It's a great decision aid as it covers the choices very comprehensively and helps the reader make judgements based on their lifestyle and needs... it's excellent and has clearly been thoughtfully and robustly developed.’
