Varsity 2014
The University's sports teams missed out on a Varsity victory at the tenth annual games on Wednesday.
The University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University battled it out in 59 events before the big Rugby Union final at the end of the night. The University won 25 events overall, but Beckett exceeded, winning 31 events.
Over 10,000 students and supporters watched the Rugby Union final at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium, which saw Beckett win 46-30. Beckett took an early lead but the game was looking close as they approached half time with Beckett just 6 points in front of the Leeds Gryphons. In the last 10 minutes of the game, the Gryphons were leading 30-23, but a string of tries and conversions saw Beckett score their way to victory.
Supporters and players also took part in a minutes applause for Maths and Finance student Richard Mayne, who died in the MH17 Malaysia Airlines crash in July. PC Matt Guy, the Universitys Police Officer, praised the behaviour of our students in a tweet:
Was at the Rugby Varsity match last night, proud of both Uni fans & players. Hope you enjoyed & got home safe @LeedsUniUnion @UoLStudents
