Emeritus Professor Lionel Cliffe

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on 23 October 2013, of Emeritus Professor Lionel Cliffe.

Lionel had international stature for his teaching, research and policy analysis of African political economy.   He was the founder of the first centre of development studies in Dar es Salaam that developed among other things new and radical analysis of Tanzania's socialist development.  In the UK he had brief teaching appointments in Durham and Sheffield before taking up a lectureship in the Department of Politics in 1978, where he subsequently became a senior lecturer in 1981, Reader in Development Studies in 1988 and Professor of Politics in 1990. Lionel retired in 2001.  He was Head of Department from 1990-93 and the first Director of the Centre for Development Studies at the University.

Since retiring he formed working collaborations within the School of Geography and he continued to be generous with his time and support for colleagues working within the sphere of African political economy and African politics. He was working on an analysis of land reform in Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

A full obituary and details of the funeral arrangements will follow.
